Television

In Kermit, many people have TVs in their homes. In fact, TVs were an important factor in reducing the deaths from the tornadoes in Southern West Virignia and the surrounding areas because programming was interrupted to bring weather alerts and tornado warnings, according to a local.

Suddenlink Communications, headquartered here in St. Louis, is the cable provider for 3 zones in West Virginia, including Kermit's zone in Central Southern WV. This link will take you Suddenlink's Network West Virginia page where you can view TV programming for the week in Kermit. Essentially, the programming is all local area information, showcasing jobs, homes, charities and churches in the zone.

In Kermit, I witnessed that the community was friendly and welcoming to us, but they were also proud of their community and focused almost solely on local issues. For example, at almost every corner, there are political yard signs that were promoting a candidate, not for President or Congress, but for Jailer, Sheriff or Town Commissioner. Sister Pat, our hostess, remarked that the Kermiteers had little interest in national affairs and no interest in international affairs, but local issues were hot all the time. Reflecting on what I saw of the community, I would say that the locally focused television programming promotes the locally-focused attitude of the people in Kermit.
